To achieve utmost efficiency and enjoyment of your hot tub, regular spa filter cleaning is definitely a requirement. How often you need to clean your spa filter depends on a number of things such as filter type, frequency of spa use, & amount of debris in the hot water, etc.
One way to keep a longer spa filter life and maintain clean hot water is to rotate your spa filter. While cleaning the dirty filter, substitute it with a spare one. Allow the cleaned filter to completely dry. That way there is no wait time.
You may also clean your hot tub filter by manual cleaning. You may rinse or spray every pleat with a garden hose, making sure all particles and visible matters are washed down. This may be done every two weeks, or more often for heavier spa use.
Every three to four months, the filter cartridge should be pre-rinsed or sprayed by a hose, then soaked overnight (follow instruction on the package) using a hot tub cleaning solution. After 24 hours, rinse your filter again with the hose, then allow to completely dry before use. You may also use an oil & scum absorber periodically (follow package instructions) to prolong filter life and maintain clear water.
Another simple and very effective way to clean your spa filter is to use the Automatic Filter Cartridge Cleaner. You will just have to connect it to a garden hose, spray filter with spa filter cleaning solution, then connect the end cap of the filter to the hose and turn on the water. It is fairly simple method and the work will be done.
Depending on your water source, scale and calcium deposits may be a concern. Muriatic Acid is probably one of the known calcium scale remover, but there are a number of products available now that are less powerful but just as effective. The cartridge is soaked in the solution until “bubbling” stops. The result is usually immediate and the scaling will disappear. Follow the safety precautions and instructions on the label
To maintain a longer lifespan of your filter, it is recommended that the spa filters be changed annually. You should also avoid detergents, bleach and other household cleaners in your hot tub to avoid foaming of the water. Bleach can cause the fibers in the filter media to degrade. Lastly, never place your spa filters in a dishwasher or power washer to avoid damaging the pleats. Always use cleaners specifically for spa filter and cartridge cleaning only.
