Solar Operated Hot Tubs work on the amazing principle that there is enough sun to heat the water without consuming any other fuel and polluting the environment. There are hot tubs which are completely solar powered. In order to get started with the solar operated hot tubs, a solar hot tub kit has to be organized which includes a solar electric panel, a water circulation pump and a thermostat.
When you take the fuel from the sun, it is being used by the solar kit to do two primary jobs. Firstly it is giving power to a circulation pump and secondly, it is heating the water. Hence electricity and heat can both be generated by solar power.
Let us see how a solar operated hot tub works. The water from the hot tub is taken by the circulation pump. The pump generally operates at about three gallons per minute, depending on the size of the solar electric panel. If the panel is bigger, there will be more flow. Also it depends on how much sun is hitting on the panel.
The pump that is used can move water as high as 100 feet and hence it requires a lot of power. A 64 watt solar electric panel can actually move water really well up to about 20 feet.
After the water from the circulation pump is pushed, it now goes through the solar thermal panels, and this is where the water gains the heat. The solar hot tub kit features solar thermal panels. Once the water is pushed through the solar panels, it returns to the hot tub. At peak sun the increase in water temperature is extremely high; there is an increase of up to 30 degrees F in the temperature from the hot tub source to the returned water which has been solar heated.
In some solar operated hot tubs, the solar kit performs a third function, which is inline filtration. The system is simple and the solar hot tub kit can be incorporated into the plumbing of existing hot tubs. But it is recommended to keep the systems separate. This allows for flexibility of both the systems.
A fourth job that can also be imposed on the solar kit is sterilization of the water. If an inline UV sterilizer is added to it, the hot tub water can be made crystal clear and almost qualified as safe drinking water. The water from the solar kit is clean, clear and has no smell at all. In fact if there are batteries and more solar electric panels, it is possible to do circulation, filtration and UV sterilization 24 hours a day. In this way exceptional water quality could be achieved.
