Hot tubs and spas are becoming increasingly more popular and they are to be found in many homes. When you mention hot tubs and spas, what springs to most people’s minds is an above ground acrylic spa. The acrylic spa is the most popular one on the market as it is quite large and can accommodate up to ten people. Acrylic spas are self contained units that require a 220 volt power supply and they usually need a concrete pad for support. Acrylic tubs are not easy to install, although they have a fairly long life and come with an extended warranty. If you don’t have a lot of room to spare than this type of spa is ideal it plugs into a standard 110 volt outlet and can be used outside or inside.
Although portable, plastic spas are a good start they are not that durable so will not stand up to a lot of use. If you want something a bit more permanent then a wooden hot tub is a better buy. The wooden tub looks a bit like an oversized wine barrel and needs a permanent platform to stand on. The wooden spa is heated by fire, is better outside and needs a fair bit of maintenance to keep it in good working order.
The in ground spa is actually a spa/tub combination and can be quite expensive. This type of spa is designed to hold as many as sixteen people although there are smaller sized spas. If you decide to have this type of spa/hot tub then you will have to have it professionally installed, as it involves a fair bit of construction work as well as the plumbing and electrical skills needed. You may need to get planning permission to have an in ground spa.The water in a ground spa is heated from a separate electrical or gas unit. Once you have an in ground spa it is very difficult if you want to move it somewhere else.
Whatever type of hot tub or spa you decide on will depend on how much space you have to spare, how much you can afford, and whether you want it just for your own use or whether it will be used for parties etc. You may also need to consider the maintenance and running costs when you are thinking about the kind of spa that you want installed. If you are having yours installed for health reasons then you will want something that is big enough to allow for movement and exercise.
